Last May 3, 2017, a specific weather forecast was recorded for the area of Lanang, Davao City (SM). The following points are the key explanation for the erroneous forecast:
1. The heavy rains that were experienced from 07:10 to 11:00pm is caused by a localized thunderstorm shown in Figures 1a and 1b.
2. Unfortunately, localized thunderstorms cannot be captured by forecast models since it can form and dissipate in a short period of time (30 minutes to 1 hour) and can only affect a certain area (<1 km). This is the dilemma of weather forecasters not only in the Philippines but all throughout the globe.
3. Even though it is unpredictable, several tools can be used to determine the existence of a thunderstorm in an area such as lightning strikes that is available in our website (https://weatherph.org/weather-maps), as shown in Figure 2.
4. Frequently check the weather forecast over your area, since it is updated every six hours (6:00am, 12:00pm, 6:00pm, and 12:00am).
