Current Status and Outlook KONG-REY has rapidly intensified into a Typhoon (TY) as it tracks northwestward slowly during the past 6 hours…will enter the eastern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by tomorrow, Monday afternoon (Oct 01).

TY KONG-REY is forecast to continue tracking northwestward for the next 24 hrs and will continue to gain strength while over the North Philippine Sea. 

Where is KONG-REY? As of 5:00 PM PhT today, September 30…0900 GMT. The center was located over the sea, west-northwest of the Northern Mariana Islands (near 14.7°N 137.6°E), about 784 km west of Hagatna, Guam (CNMI) or 1,451 km east of Bicol Region, Philippines
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 120 kph near the center…Gustiness: 150 kph
Past Movement (06 hrs) Northwest @ 14 km/hr, towards the North Philippine Sea.
Forecast Highlights
  • TY KONG-REY is still too far away to directly affect any part of the Philippines, and may not even come close to the Philippine landmass based on the current WPF forecast. 
  • This typhoon will be named locally as “QUEENIE” upon its entry to the PAR and is likely to reach its peak intensity on Tuesday to Wednesday (Oct 02-03), while traversing the southeastern part of the North Philippine Sea.
  • The Day 4 to 5 Forecast (Oct 04-05) shows it moving out of PAR on Friday early morning. The confidence of this forecast is low (<35% chance).
  • The next StormWatch Update will be issued after 24 hours or by Monday early evening (Oct 01).
