Tropical Depression 03W StormWatch No. 01

Current Status and Outlook The Tropical Disturbance (LPA) over the Caroline Islands, west of Guam has developed into Tropical Depression 03W. This LPA is forecast to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) bytomorrow morning (Wednesday, April 26).  It will be locally named as “DANTE.”
Where is 03W? As of 8:00 PM PhT today, April 25…1200 GMT.  The center was located along the Western Pacific Ocean, outside of PAR (near 9.4N 133.1E), about 1,235 km east of Bicol Region, Philippines or 475 km north-northwest of Colonia, Yap State. 
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 55 kph near the center…Gustiness: 75 kph
Where is it heading? It was moving Northwest @ 07 kph, towards Central Philippine Sea.
Forecast Highlights
  • The Global Typhoon Models (GTM) are showing that TD 03W will strengthen into a Tropical Storm (TS) before it starts to recurve, away from the Philippine Sea.
  • The latest Day 3-4 Forecast shows TD 03W turning away from the Philippine Sea, and exiting the PAR by late Fridayor Saturday (Apr 28 or 29).  This forecast is at MEDIUM to HIGH CONFIDENCE.
  • TD 03W is too far to directly affect any part of the Philippines and will remain a non-threat system to the country.
