Current Status and Outlook Typhoon (TY) KONG-REY (QUEENIE) rapidly intensified overnight and becomes the sixth Super Typhoon of the 2018 Season as it continues to barrel into the North Philippine Sea.

This Typhoon is not expected to affect any part of the Philippines based in the current WPF Forecast. 

STY KONG-REY is expected to continue moving northwestward across the southern part of the North Philippine Sea through the next 24 hrs while weakening slightly by Wednesday afternoon (Oct 03).

Where is KONG-REY (QUEENIE)? As of 5:00 PM PhT today, October 02…0900 GMT. The eye was located over the northeastern part of the Central Philippine Sea (near 18.7°N 131.6°E), about 997 km east of Santa Ana, Cagayan or 1,025 km east of Basco, Batanes
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 240 kph near the center…Gustiness: 295 kph
Past Movement (06 hrs) Northwest @ 14 km/hr, towards the North Philippine Sea.

  • STY KONG-REY is far away to directly affect any part of the Philippines, and may not even come close to the Philippine landmass based on the current WPF forecast. 
  • It will maintain its Super Typhoon (STY) intensity through Wednesday afternoon (Oct 03) while over the southeastern part of the North Philippine Sea.
  • The Day 2 to 3 Forecast (Oct 04-05) shows it moving out of PAR on Friday early morning. The confidence of this forecast remains LOW (<35% chance).
  • The next StormWatch Update will be issued after 24 hours or by Wednesday evening (Oct 03).
