Current Status and Outlook

VONGFONG (AMBO) has rapidly weakened into a Tropical Storm (TS)  after traversing Central Luzon last night…now in the vicinity of Naguilian, La Union. Disorganized rainbands of the storm will continue to spread across Central & Northern Luzon bringing scattered to widespread rains and thunderstorms for the next 12 to 24 hours.

24-hr Outlook: TS VONGFONG (AMBO) is forecast to move northward @ 18 km/hr upon emerging over the West Philippine Sea, near the coastal areas of Ilocos Provinces. It expected to weaken further while over the western part of the Balintang Channel around 2 AM tomorrow (May 17).

Where is VONGFONG (AMBO)? As of 5:00 AM PhT today, May 16…2100 GMT. The center was located over Naguilian, La Union (near 16.5°N 120.4°E), about 12 km south-southeast of San Fernando City, La Union or 24 km west-northwest of Baguio City, Benguet.

Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 75 kph near the center…Gustiness: 95 kph.

TUESDAY EARLY MORNING: Exits the northern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), while accelerates rapidly NE-ward across the Southern Islands of Japan…becoming an Extratropical Cyclone…about 467 km E of Taipei, Taiwan [2AM May 19: 24.9°N 126.2°E @ 35kph].  Confidence LevelLOW.
