Tropical Depression 03W StormWatch No. 01

Current Status and Outlook The small, but strong disturbance (LPA) over Central Micronesia has developed into Tropical Depression (TD) 03W…could pose a threat to Mindanao early next week. Forecast to enter the southeastern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Sunday, Mar 17.

This TD is still far to directly affect any part of the country within the next 3 days.

Where is 03W? As of 5:00 PM PhT today, March 15…0900 GMT. The center was located approaching the southern sections of Western Micronesia [near 8.2°N 142.2°E], about 850 km east of Koror, Palau or 1,743 km east of Cateel, Davao Oriental
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 45 kph near the center…Gustiness: 65 kph
Past Movement (06 hrs) Westward @ 26 km/hr, towards the Western Micronesia-Palau Area.
Forecast Highlights
  • This TD is expected to intensify slightly within the next 24 to 36 hours, and is expected to enter the PAR by early Sunday morning (Mar 17).
  • The Day 3 Forecast (Mar 18) shows TD 03W weakening into a Tropical Disturbance (LPA) as it approaches the eastern coast of Davao Oriental on Monday afternoon (Mar 18). Forecast confidence is at LOW (<35% chance).
  • TD 03W’s rainbands and its possible enhancement of the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) could bring much-needed rainfall across parts of Mindanao and Visayas, and Bicol Region early next week.  Please be advised that strong thunderstorms may also occur across these areas which could cause flash floods and landslides. Precautionary measures must be implemented during the approach of this tropical cyclone.
  • It will be named locally by PAGASA as “CHEDENG” once it enters the PAR.
  • The next StormWatch Update will be issued after 24 hours.
