Current Status and Outlook

Typhoon LINGLING (LIWAYWAY) has slightly accelerated northeastward during the past 6 hours as it slowly intensified…expected to pass over or very close to Miyakojima before moving out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday afternoon.

24-hr Outlook: TY LINGLING (LIWAYWAY) is forecast to turn northward across the eastern part of the East Taiwan Sea with a slow forward speed of 11 km/hr and will continue gaining strength, reaching wind speeds of about 165 km/hr on Thursday afternoon (Sept 05).

This storm will continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and bring cloudy skies with passing scattered to at times widespread rain showers and thunderstorms with squalls (sudden gust of winds) across Extreme Northern Luzon, and the Western Sections of Northern Luzon particularly Ilocos Provinces and the Batanes-Babuyan Island Group tonight and tomorrow.

Where is LINGLING (LIWAYWAY)? As of 5:00 PM PhT today, September 04…0900 GMT. The eye was located over the southeasternmost part of the East Taiwan Sea (near 22.7°N 125.4°E), about 425 km east-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes or 578 km northeast of Santa Ana, Cagayan.

Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 130 kph near the center…Gustiness: 155 kph.

THURSDAY AFTERNOON: Intensifies to a Category 2 Typhoon as it passes in the vicinity of Miyakojima, turns back to a Northward track as it is about to exit the northern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)…about 398 km E of Taipei, Taiwan [2PM Sept 05: 24.8°N 125.5°E @ 165kph].  Confidence Level: HIGH.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON: Still intensifying, becomes a Category 3 Typhoon as it accelerates Northward across the East China Sea, outside of PAR…about 457 km SE of Shanghai, China [2PM Sept 06: 28.8°N 125.3°E @ 170kph].  Confidence Level: HIGH.
