Current Status and Outlook

Tropical Storm LINGLING (LIWAYWAY) has further slowed down and gained more strength, as it starts to turn northward while passing over the eastern portions of the Balintang and Bashi Channels. Its western and southwestern rainbands continues to spread across Extreme Northern Luzon.

24-hr Outlook: TS LINGLING (LIWAYWAY) is forecast to move northward across the eastern portion of Bashi Channel and East Taiwan Sea with a forward speed of 18 km/hr and will continue gaining strength, attaining minimal Typhoon classification by early Wednesday morning (Sept 04).

This storm will continue to enhance the Southwesterly Surface Windflow (Weak Habagat) and bring cloudy skies with isolated to scattered rain showers and thunderstorms with squalls (sudden gust of winds) across Western and Southern Luzon including Metro Manila, Bicol Region, MiMaRoPa, Sulu Archipelago, and Western Visayas today.

Where is LINGLING (LIWAYWAY)? As of 5:00 AM PhT today, September 03…2100 GMT. The center was located over the northeastern part of the Balintang Channel (near 19.3°N 124.1°E), about 224 km east-northeast of Santa Ana, Cagayan or 254 km east-southeast of Basco, Batanes.

Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 85 kph near the center…Gustiness: 100 kph.

Past Movement (06 hrs) North-Northwest @ 17 kph, towards the Eastern Part of Bashi Channel and East Taiwan Sea.

THURSDAY EARLY MORNING: Continues to intensify as it passes in the vicinity of Miyakojima while turning NNE slightly, about to exit the northern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)…about 357 km E of Taipei, Taiwan [2AM Sept 05: 24.9°N 125.1°E @ 130kph].  Confidence Level: LOW.

FRIDAY EARLY MORNING: Still intensifying, becomes a Category 2 Typhoon as it accelerates northward across the East China Sea…about 491 km NE of Taipei, Taiwan [2AM Sept 06: 27.7°N 125.5°E @ 145kph].  Confidence LevelLOW.
